Neat write-up! I lived in Miami for 7 years and I have family in Jamaica...yet I never went on a cruise. I used to drive to work on Miami Beach in the morning and wave back to the people who were waving out over the railings of the ocean liners. Very cool to hear what it's like from the other side!

Hi Renee - as you know, my wife and I have just completed our trip from London to Buenos Aires aboard Grande Francia, a cargo/freighter ship!

We chose to do this mostly for the freedom it gaves us whilst aboard, granted we were still a 'captive' audience and we had to make our own entertainment, however I wouldn't change teh way we did it at all.

We had 9 other passengers, all of whom were interesting and all like minded, all keen to try different things - one is riding his motorbike through South/Central/North America, Russia and finally to Southern Europe. Others are taking their cars to the back of beyond - all had interesting stories and was a pleasure being with them.

We also got to see a lot more in the sense that we were part of the ships crew, we had many a party with the fillipino crew and will remember these nights fondly.

Our only negative point being that on a couple of occasions we were not allowed ashore due to a political situation and maybe a shorter time ashore in certain places though for the fact that we had free reign of the ship, visiting the engine rooms, spending time on the bridge, being shown how to make pasta by the chef certainly made for a memorable experience.

Hasta Pronto!

Liz, exactly! It wasn't a waste of my time....there were good moments....but I think it's always telling whether or not you would do it again. However, I do think if there was a twist of sorts, like a Mediterranean or Alaskan cruise or even a freighter cruise....that might pique my interest more.

Cruises definitely aren't for everyone! I took a very similar cruise (Carnival to Cozumel, Cayman and New Orelans) to the one you took abt 10 yrs ago with some friends, and we had fun but it wasn't something I was dying to repeat.

Then this summer I took an Alaska Princess cruise, and it was incredible because you saw amazing scenery from the ship. The day at sea wasn't spent doing cheesy stuff, it was spent looking at glaciers and searching for wildlife. Even when it wasn't officially "scenic cruising", there was almost always great scenery. So, if you're ever brave enough to try a cruise again, I'd recommend Alaska.

Nice post about a subject I've been rather negative about, too. But I've always thought that I should give a cruise a try to get the real experience. Like you, I don't like the idea of being confined and planned activities aren't usually my thing on a trip. The other thing that always troubled me was my impression that it's all about food and socializing and not enough about really experiencing places -- like going to a resort in Jamaica and never leaving the confines of the property. It sounds like you felt the excursions were a good value.

I suppose that getting a good travel planner to select exactly the right cruise is quite important.

Jeremy Branham made some great points in his article about river cruises v. ocean cruises (http://www.examiner.com/budget-travel-in-sacramento/5-reasons-why-river-cruises-are-better-than-ocean-cruises), so I agree...these are two very different experiences. Thanks for stopping by, Andrea.

I have to say, I am not a cruise fan. Something about all that canned fun and retirees. Also hate being limited to a day in each stop and sleeping on the boat. I do think some cruises can be fun, though. John always raves about this sailing cruise he took along the Turkish coast. But I think that's a completely different experience than what you and I are talking about. Great post!

Inka, I'm nodding my head furiously in agreement! lol As far as some of the entertainment was concerned, some people definitely enjoyed it more than others. However, I found myself spending a lot of time in the library reading.

There's the rub, Ayngelina. I think that cruising is for people who like to be guided throughout their vacation. I don't mean that in an offensive way, but some people prefer the luxury of laying back and leaving the planning to others....and that's fine. However, I can't help to rebel at that notion. I have to control my destiny! I think half the fun of a journey is the opportunity to discover it on your own terms.

You know I've never taken a cruise myself but I read about it more and more and I'm intrigued. I just don't know as an independent traveler if I could adapt to cruise life.

Renee, I went on a Carnival cruise with similar stops and I agree. I felt claustrophobic during sea days and what I hated most was the merry making and what the entertainers considered fun. Honestly a 'hairy chest contest' is not my idea of pleasant, it was plain disgusting.

See! That's what I mean.....everyone can have a totally different experience which is why I didn't want to discourage anyone, but to give another point of view instead. Thanks for checking in, Sabina!
