I actually have done couch surfing and had a wonderful experience. A gf and I were traveling in Italy and decided to try it out. We were a bit nervous about how it would turn out since our hosts ended up being two guys... not 100% safe sometimes if you're not traveling with another guy, but luckily we had wonderful hosts who also were frequent couch surfers. they took us around all their favorite local spots in verona, and even cooked for us. great tips! There are some good websites that can connect you to people looking for house sitters and I like that because you'd have the house to yourself while you're there.
